Gujarat government goes all out to welcome PM Narendra Modi on first visit home

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Gujarat on Tuesday will be a special one. Modi will be arriving for a maiden visit to his home state after he took over the prime minister's office nearly four months ago.

The visit also coincides with the day when the Gujarat by-elections results, including that of the Vadodara Lok Sabha and Maninagar Assembly seats which he vacated, will be declared. The BJP expects to retain all the 10 seats for which the by-elections were held.

That meticulous planning went behind the two-day visit can be further understood as Modi will be arriving a day ahead of the prestigious visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Gujarat's commercial capital Ahmedabad. And, September 17 is Modi's birthday.

The state BJP unit is leaving no stone unturned to welcome Modi as well as BJP national president Amit Shah. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel personally managed the complete arrangements of places where Modi and Xi would visit over the next two days. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has allocated a whopping Rs.10 crore to spruce up the city ahead of the high profile visits.

On Tuesday, Modi's felicitation function will be held in Gandhinagar. The chief minister and her Cabinet colleagues, party office bearers, MPs and MLAs, municipal councillors from Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara and presidents of district panchayats will attend the event.

While Anandiben is trying to position herself as Modi's successor in Gujarat, the prime minister will launch several welfare and public service initiatives of the Gujarat government on September 17 at a special function to be held at Mahatma Mandir. Incidentally, the convention centre was initiated by Modi in Gandhinagar

On September 17, Modi will receive Xi and escort him to the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, Hotel Grand Hyatt and finally to the Sabarmati Riverfront Garden, where they will have early dinner before leaving for Delhi.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's younger brother Pankaj Modi said the family has arranged for a variety of sweets at their home in Sector 22 in Gandhinagar where Narendra Modi, as usual, will visit to seek birthday blessings from his mother. Modi visits his mother Hiraba on every birthday.
